The constant exchange of ideas and technical solutions is an essential part of evolution in Formula 1. According to Rob Marshall, McLaren’s chief designer, observing and even trying to replicate concepts from rival teams is part of the permanent quest for performance.

In F1, where every thousandth of a second can define grid positions, teams carefully analyze any innovation presented by competitors. Marshall explained that this process goes far beyond simply copying a solution seen on another car.
According to the engineer, the first step is to evaluate whether a given idea is compatible with the regulations and the architecture of their own project. “We analyze everything. Some things are quickly discarded when we look at the rules, but others remain under analysis,” Marshall stated.

The director detailed that many of these ideas undergo in-depth studies before any decision. “Some are even tested in the wind tunnel or in CFD, while others are just theoretical experiments to understand if they would be good or bad for us,” he explained.
Marshall also highlighted that McLaren constantly monitors what all teams are doing across the grid. “We observe practically everything our rivals do and try to assess if it would work on our car,” he said, challenging a common belief in the paddock. “There’s a frequent phrase in F1 that copying doesn’t work, that what works on one car won’t work on another, but that’s not necessarily true.”
