Lando Norris begins the 2026 Formula 1 season with the intention of defending his drivers’ championship title, won narrowly in 2025 after an intense battle against Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen. However, the British driver acknowledged that McLaren is not yet in a position to compete for the title with the current car, following the conclusion of pre-season testing held in Bahrain.

Despite this, Norris believes in the team’s development potential and sees great opportunities for evolution throughout the season: “At the moment, we need to improve the car if we want to compete more consistently and feel confident for the first race,” stated the defending champion. McLaren performed well in pre-season testing but did not draw as much attention as its direct competitors.
When questioned about the responsibility of defending his title, Norris was direct: “Honestly, I don’t think there is a responsibility. There is always a responsibility in life, but I’m going to do my best to defend the title and continue the good run.” He highlighted that, although the 2026 season brings new challenges, the fact that he already won the championship last year has made him more confident.

“I feel better than ever,” said Norris. “Winning the championship last year gave me confidence. Now I know I am capable of winning it again. The season is long, and I will ensure I do my part to give McLaren the best chance of repeating the feat,” he added.
