George Russell sent a direct message to his competitors after a difficult weekend for him at the Japanese Grand Prix of Formula 1. Despite losing ground to his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who took the lead in the championship, the Briton showed confidence in Mercedes’ performance for the rest of the 2026 season.

Even with recent difficulties, the German team started the year dominantly, winning the first three rounds of the championship. The good functioning of the power unit together with the chassis put Russell and Antonelli as protagonists in the early phase of the title fight.
Russell started the championship strongly after a dominant weekend in Australia, but saw his pace drop in the following rounds. In China, the Briton lost ground to Antonelli, a scenario that repeated in Japan, where he finished off the podium while the young Italian claimed his second consecutive victory.
Despite the not very favorable moment for him, Russell remains confident in Mercedes’ technical package and believes the team’s performance will continue strong throughout the championship: “As a team, we had an incredible start to the year, and for me personally it started very well, but I had a challenging race in Japan,” he said.
The Briton also highlighted that the season is far from decided: “It’s a very long season, and the most important thing is that we have a very good package. I’m feeling good and confident,” he said.

Russell also assessed that the small break in the calendar in April ended up being positive to reorganize the team and regain focus. According to him, the new technical rules favored Mercedes’ characteristics, contributing to the competitive performance shown so far.
“This small break will be a good restart, and I’m ready to come back. We have an incredible group of engineers and designers, and with the previous regulations we had difficulties, but this new set of rules, the new car and the new engine are more aligned with our strengths,” he added.
The British driver also highlighted that internal motivation has been decisive for the current moment: “This desire to put Mercedes back on top really pushed us up to this point,” he concluded.
With the season still in its early phase, Russell believes he can react quickly and return to fighting for wins. The next round in Miami will be decisive to measure this recovery, with the Briton signaling a more aggressive stance in search of regaining prominence in Formula 1.
