Formula 1 has once again become a stage for tension following Max Verstappen’s criticism of the new 2026 regulations. The category’s CEO, Stefano Domenicali, responded to the Red Bull Racing driver, asking him to consider the bigger picture behind the changes.

Verstappen has been one of the harshest critics of the new technical rules. The Dutchman has already described the current regulation as ‘anti-racing’ and compared the future of the category to a ‘Formula E on steroids’, even suggesting he might leave Formula 1 if the changes are not reviewed.
Meanwhile, discussions between the FIA, Formula 1, and the teams are ongoing during the forced break in the calendar in April. The goal is to evaluate possible adjustments before the season resumes at the Miami GP, with Domenicali adopting a conciliatory tone in the face of criticism.
“You know me, I have a lot of respect for Max. I talk to him frequently and, of course, he has strong opinions,” said Domenicali. According to the executive, it is important to remember the reasons that led to the creation of the new regulation: “We need to remember why we are here with this regulation. Otherwise, we lose the starting point.”
The executive also acknowledged that some of the driver’s criticisms are valid and justify the current discussions: “Certain points are valid, and that is why we are here to correct them together,” he said. Domenicali also emphasized that the Dutchman should understand that there is a broader context behind the changes.

“He will understand that there is a bigger picture. We may like certain things more or less, but everyone needs to understand that there are reasons for this,” he continued. The category’s CEO also praised the combative stance of the Dutch driver, as long as the discussions take place in the appropriate forums.
Domenicali reinforced that he does not intend to adopt a confrontational stance in the negotiations: “I will never be confrontational. It’s not my style and it doesn’t add value.” He also stressed that Formula 1 is bigger than any individual involved in the sport.
“The sport is bigger than any one of us. That is something everyone needs to remember,” he said. Domenicali also highlighted the longevity of the category, now in its 76th year, as proof of Formula 1’s solidity in the face of changes and debates over time.
Finally, the executive promised to make decisions thinking about the future of the category: “I will never do anything that harms the category. With my experience, I know how to avoid pitfalls that may have short-term repercussions but are not good for medium and long-term goals,” Domenicali concluded.
