The participation of Formula 1 drivers in other categories has once again sparked debate following the recent performances of Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll in GT3 cars. The unexpected break in the F1 calendar opened up space for the two to compete outside the main category, raising the question of whether more drivers should follow this path.

During the break caused by the cancellation of two rounds in April, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs due to the war in the Middle East, Stroll and Verstappen took the opportunity to race in other competitions. The situation reignited a recurring discussion about the possibility of current Formula 1 drivers participating more frequently in other categories.
Over the weekend at Paul Ricard, Stroll showed competitiveness in his stint in the GT World Challenge six-hour race. However, the Comtoyou Racing team received penalties that took the team out of contention for the victory, frustrating the final result.
The presence of Formula 1 drivers in other categories is not a historical novelty. Names like Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jacky Ickx, Mario Andretti, and Stirling Moss balanced the main category with other competitions throughout the seasons.
On the other hand, the Formula 1 calendar was considerably smaller in the past. With the growth in the number of races over the years, it has become increasingly difficult for drivers to balance additional commitments with the main schedule.

Fernando Alonso was one of the most recent examples of an active driver who raced outside of Formula 1. In 2017, the Spaniard participated in the Indianapolis 500 with McLaren’s authorization, taking the opportunity while still during the season.
Stroll also has experience outside the category, having competed twice in the 24 Hours of Daytona. However, as it is held in January, the race does not directly interfere with the Formula 1 calendar.
Although it is common to see former drivers from the category migrating to other competitions after leaving the F1 grid, this movement is increasingly rare among active drivers. Still, with two races recently canceled, the participation of Stroll and Verstappen in GT3 races has reignited the discussion about the possibility of more drivers taking advantage of these opportunities outside of Formula 1.
Verstappen is also already confirmed for the iconic 24 Hours of Nurburgring race, which will be held in early May.
