Martin Brundle spoke about Carlos Sainz’s situation should he need to leave Williams in Formula 1. The former driver pointed out how the Spaniard is in a complicated scenario, as he has no competitive path.

The start of the 2026 season has been quite complicated for the British team which, even before the start of the championship, missed the shakedown in Barcelona. Now, after three rounds, the Smooth Operator has two points, but the team is only ahead of Cadillac and Aston Martin.
When Brundle was asked if Sainz could leave Williams, he replied on the Sky F1 podcast that “where would Carlos go? He’s already been at McLaren. He’s already been at Red Bull with Toro Rosso, as it was called at the time. He’s already been at Ferrari and Williams. There is no room at Mercedes.”

“He also had a stint at Renault, which is now Alpine. It’s hard to know where he would go to get something better without revisiting places where, for some reason, he wasn’t invited to stay. So it’s really difficult for him. I feel for him because, while I don’t think he has the absolute talent of a Verstappen and company, he is a fighter. He is like his father — relentless — and that manifests itself often,” he continued.
“Some of the races he won were absolutely exceptional, so it would be a shame. He is in a difficult situation because he has already driven for almost half the teams on the grid in his career. So, unless a seat opens up unexpectedly — unless Red Bull suddenly needs someone because Max decided to dedicate himself to GT racing and simulators, or something like that, for a year or two — I don’t know what else he would do,” he concluded.
