Formula 1 gained another remarkable chapter in its history this Saturday with Kimi Antonelli’s pole position at the 2026 Chinese GP. In addition to securing the first pole of his career, the Italian became the youngest driver of all time to achieve the feat in the category.

The result in Shanghai reinforces a trajectory that had already been surrounded by expectation since the junior categories. At 19 years old, Antonelli managed to break a record that belonged to historical Formula 1 names and placed his name on a list reserved for very rare talents.
The Italian driver’s rise began to draw attention back in karting, between 2014 and 2021. His performance was so strong that Mercedes decided to incorporate him into its young driver program when he was only 11 years old, starting to support all his development towards the main category.
His single-seater debut took place in 2021, in Formula 4. After a first year of adaptation, Antonelli accelerated for good in 2022, when he won the Italian F4 title and also the ADAC Formula 4 title racing for Prema.
The following year consolidated the Italian as one of the most promising names in world motorsport. In 2023, he won the Formula Regional Middle East and then also conquered the Formula Regional European Championship, extending an impressive streak of titles in the junior categories.
This rapid growth paved the way for his arrival in Formula 2 in 2024, again with Prema. While gaining experience in the main feeder series to Formula 1, Antonelli was already being closely monitored by Mercedes as part of the German team’s long-term plan.

Mercedes’ confidence in his talent became evident when the team decided to choose him, at 18 years old, to take Lewis Hamilton’s place. The seven-time champion left the team after 12 seasons to move to Ferrari, and Antonelli took the seat surrounded by enormous expectation.
Even before reaching Formula 1, the Italian’s resume was already impressive. In his first season in the main category, he experienced ups and downs, had initial difficulties in direct comparison with his teammate, but showed clear evolution throughout the championship. In the end, he secured three podiums and also guaranteed a pole for the Sprint in Miami.
Now, with the pole achieved at the Chinese GP, Antonelli went further and rewrote the Formula 1 record books. The Italian reached the top spot on the grid at 19 years and 201 days old, becoming the only driver in history to achieve a pole before the age of 20.
With this, he surpassed Sebastian Vettel, who was the previous record holder after the famous pole in Monza, for Toro Rosso, at the 2008 Italian GP, at 21 years, 2 months, and 11 days old. Charles Leclerc appears in third place on this special list, followed by names such as Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, Rubens Barrichello, Lewis Hamilton, and Heikki Kovalainen.
The achievement in Shanghai reinforces that Antonelli is not just a prospect, but already a name capable of defining an era in Formula 1. And, given the age at which he set the new record, the Italian’s mark has the potential to remain untouched for a long time.
