Formula 1 will have an important change on the Sprint grid for the 2026 Chinese GP. Alex Albon will not start in the position obtained in qualifying and will start the sprint race from the pits after changes made by Williams to his car.

The British team opted to modify the suspension setup of the Thai driver’s FW48. As these changes were made after Sprint qualifying, the car had to break Parc Fermé conditions, which automatically results in a pit lane start.
Albon had qualified in 18th position in the session that defined the Sprint grid. The driver finished just behind his teammate, Carlos Sainz, who will start immediately ahead of him in the official formation.
With Williams’ decision to adjust the car, the Thai driver will no longer occupy his position on the starting grid. Instead, the competitor will start from the pit area when the sprint race begins at the Shanghai circuit.
Breaking Parc Fermé conditions occurs when a team needs to make significant changes to the car after qualifying has ended. In these situations, Formula 1 regulations dictate that the driver cannot start normally on the grid.

Despite the sporting penalty, teams often choose to make this type of modification when they believe the adjustments can improve the car’s performance throughout the race. Suspension changes, for example, can directly influence the vehicle’s behavior in corners and overall stability.
In Williams’ case, the change was made specifically to the suspension setup of Albon’s car. The goal is to adjust the FW48’s behavior for the Shanghai track conditions.
The Chinese GP Sprint is contested over a shorter distance than the main race and awards points to the top eight finishers. Even starting from the pits, Albon will still have the opportunity to recover positions throughout the race.
The result of the sprint race can also provide important data for teams before the qualifying session that will define the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix. For Williams, the car adjustments can serve as part of the preparation for the rest of the weekend in Shanghai.
