F1: Process puts finances of group owning the Cadillac team under investigation

The financial structure behind Cadillac in Formula 1 came into the spotlight after Mark Walter, a team shareholder, and TWG Global became the target of a class action lawsuit in the United States. The case is being heard in a federal court in Florida and involves allegations related to insurance companies linked to the businessman.

This action was filed by Ira Rosner, 67, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. According to the accusation, Walter allegedly used TWG Global, Delaware Life Insurance, and Group 1001 in a scheme that concealed federal investigations and directed billions of dollars belonging to policyholders.

According to the lawsuit, insurance companies associated with Walter allegedly used client funds to finance a wide network of businesses. Reports state that approximately 42% of the insurers’ assets, about US$17 billion, were directed towards private interests linked to the businessman, including stakes in sports teams, and later, in motorsport.

The structure also includes TWG Motorsport, a division of TWG Global that acquired Andretti Global and later partnered with General Motors to launch Cadillac in F1. TWG Global performs investment functions and also has an operational role in the team’s organization.

Group 1001 Insurance confirmed, through a spokesperson quoted by USA Today, that it became aware of the lawsuit but rejected any conclusion of wrongdoing: “No court has determined that Group 1001 Insurance or Delaware Life Insurance Company did anything wrong, and we intend to vigorously defend the case,” the company stated.

This civil lawsuit does not directly interrupt Cadillac’s operations on the track, and no criminal charges have been filed against the executives. Still, the case increases scrutiny over Walter’s businesses, who recently agreed to sell his stakes in the Los Angeles Lakers and Chelsea. In August, TWG also denied any intention to sell the Formula 1 team or other TWG Motorsport assets: “TWG is not considering selling the Cadillac team or any other part of TWG Motorsport,” the company said in a statement during the Dutch GP weekend.
