More than thirty years after one of the most turbulent seasons in Formula 1 history, Michael Schumacher will have his campaign for his first world title revisited in a new Netflix documentary. ‘Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend’ premieres globally on October 2, 2026, and will have the full support of the German’s family.

Produced in a different format from a traditional retrospective documentary, the film aims to transport the audience directly to the events of 1994. According to co-producer Janek Romero, the production adopted an immersive narrative, with archival footage and present-day testimonials, seeking to make that season feel like it is happening again.
The most notable absence is Damon Hill, Schumacher’s main rival in the 1994 title fight. Romero and Sabine Kehm, the German’s former manager, explained that Hill received several invitations to participate but was focused on his own commitments, and therefore did not grant any interviews for the project.
Even without the current participation of the Briton, his presence was not removed from the story. The documentary’s creators stated that Hill’s perspective appears significantly through archival footage from the time, while the production’s focus was broadened beyond the rivalry between the two drivers.

Kehm also highlighted the emotional nature of the project, which includes Corinna Schumacher and recalls memories of that period: “It was a very dramatic season, with many ups and downs and very emotionally complicated,” she said, emphasizing that despite the difficulties, especially the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger during the San Marino GP weekend, then held at the Imola circuit, she considers 1994 a story of joy because of the impact Schumacher made by winning the world title at that moment.
The production also aims to introduce Schumacher to a new generation of fans who know his seven titles but may not have followed the events of 1994. For Romero, the goal was to explore the personal side of the German driver and his transformation under enormous public pressure, showing how a young karting driver came to occupy a central space in front of the world media, winning seven Formula 1 titles.
