F1 CEO considers “quite large” chance of V8 engines' return

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, considers the possibility of the category returning to using V8 engines in the coming years to be high. The proposal, advocated by the president of the FIA (International Automobile Federation), Mohammed Ben Sulayem, foresees the use of these engines with sustainable fuels and could be put into practice as early as 2030.

“I think it’s quite big. The FIA president really wants it and we support him in that regard. Of course, everything still needs to be detailed. But I think we are all moving in the right direction in that aspect,” Domenicali said in an interview with De Telegraaf.

The idea has gained support from many F1 teams and also from the drivers. The debate occurs while the category is in its first year of the current engine cycle, whose 2026 units, which equally divide the use of fuel and electrical energy, have not received a predominantly positive evaluation from competitors.

Domenicali stated that drivers will have an increasingly greater say in the category’s decisions: “I always listen to the drivers; they are our crown jewels. I have always said that and I will always continue to do so. If we look at the current engines: we cannot forget that these current models come from the manufacturers. Years ago, they wanted to go in that direction, and for us it was basically accept or leave. The world evolves, and so does the sport,” concluded the executive.
