Mercedes has confirmed that Kimi Antonelli will receive a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, following the introduction of new components in his power unit. The decision was based on engineering calculations and disregarded the fact that it will be the home race of the current 2026 Formula 1 championship leader.

Team principal Toto Wolff explained that Monza was considered the best track to take the penalty due to the long straights and overtaking opportunities, which facilitate recovery in the pack:
“Our theory, our calculations say this is the best track to take [a penalty],” Wolff explained. “Obviously, the algorithms do not take nationality into account. We are here to act for the sake of a championship and not to get the maximum PR.”
Antonelli had already expected the penalty since the beginning of last week. Although he will have to start further back in the Italian race, Mercedes bets that the new power unit and the car’s straight-line speed will allow him to recover positions and reduce the impact on the championship standings.

The team is also evaluating George Russell’s situation. “So, yes, that’s what we’re going to do. With George, discussions are ongoing,” Wolff added, indicating that Mercedes is still deciding whether to adopt different or similar strategies for the two drivers.
The expectation is that the strategic gain throughout the season will offset Antonelli’s initial setback in Monza. The race in Italy takes place on September 6.
