Mercedes enters the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season still in the lead, but Toto Wolff acknowledged that the team has lost ground in car development. Despite the progress of direct competitors, the team principal remains confident in the technical potential available for the remaining twelve races.

Currently, Mercedes leads the constructors’ championship with a 72-point advantage over Ferrari, while Kimi Antonelli holds the top spot among drivers, 50 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton. However, the situation has become less comfortable after rivals secured three wins in the last five races, two by Ferrari and one by McLaren.
Wolff admitted that the team needs to accelerate development to maintain the positions achieved in the first half of the championship: “Championships will be decided by execution and the development pace we manage to impose on the car in the next twelve races. Although we are a bit behind our rivals in terms of updates, we still have technical potential to explore and a clear development plan to achieve it,” he said.
The executive also acknowledged that Mercedes let opportunities slip and that the performance gap to competitors has narrowed: “We let some points slip. Our competitors have reduced the performance gap, and we know that the second half will require more effort from us than the first half of the season,” he added.

The season resumes in Zandvoort next weekend, a circuit that represents a particular challenge for the German team. Mercedes has yet to win the Dutch GP since the race returned to the calendar, and 2026 will be its last opportunity before the event leaves the calendar next year.
“Although we have come close, we have never won in the Netherlands in the modern era. This is our last chance to turn things around, and it is a challenge we would like to achieve,” Wolff concluded.
