Williams had a complicated qualifying session for the Formula 1 Australian GP, marked by reliability issues with the Mercedes power unit. Alex Albon took 15th place on the grid, while Carlos Sainz was unable to complete the session and starts only 21st.

Team principal James Vowles acknowledged the difficulties faced but remained focused on learning and evolution: “We haven’t had a clean weekend by any means so far, with only one car competing in the qualifying session due to reliability issues with the power unit. We know we are at a disadvantage, but we have a clear understanding of where we need to evolve, and fast. There are already programs underway to achieve these goals. Our plan for tomorrow is to get both cars to the end of the race, so we can build on the learning and apply it in Shanghai next week. Congratulations to Mercedes for P1 and P2 today, that is the benchmark and gives us something to aim for,” he stated.
Albon highlighted the importance of making the most of the situation and looking for opportunities in the race: “We maximized what we could today, after facing some reliability issues this weekend. We were limited in some practice sessions, so reaching Q2 was a decent result. There is a lot of work to do, it’s not something that is solved overnight, but we will keep pushing and trying to resolve the reliability issues and limitations we identified. For tomorrow, I believe we can expect some chaos, especially at the start, and few teams managed to do long runs due to the red flags throughout the weekend, so it could be interesting. From our position, we expect a bit of chaos and we will try to keep everything clean and take advantage of any opportunity in the race,” he added.

Sainz, who faced an even more difficult weekend, highlighted the frustration with the technical problems: “For now, it has been a very complicated weekend, full of reliability issues in all sessions. It’s frustrating because we didn’t have problems during testing, so coming here and only being able to complete FP1 and the start of FP2, missing the other sessions today, is disappointing. I hope that tomorrow we can race, accumulate experience and good learning, even starting at a disadvantage,” the Spaniard concluded frustratedly.
Despite the difficulties, Williams is focusing on the Melbourne race as an opportunity for learning, data collection, and preparation for the next round in Shanghai, seeking to extract the most from a challenging situation.
