With results below expectations and no points in the last five rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Williams and James Vowles have become the target of questions ahead of the Dutch GP next weekend.

The team expected to use 2026 as a starting point to move up the grid and return to competing for podiums, after achieving significant results last season. The scenario this year, however, has been quite different, with Williams being the only team not to participate in the pre-season shakedown in Barcelona and arriving at the first rounds with an overweight and underdeveloped car.
One of the problems pointed out lies in the team’s structure. The Grove factory, opened in 1996, remained relatively unchanged until 2023, when a modernization process began, while the old wind tunnel’s demolition was announced in 2025 to make way for a more updated facility. Additionally, Williams operates with a budget lower than most teams and carries a recent history of difficulties in developing its cars.
In this scenario, Vowles’ leadership has come under scrutiny. The current Williams boss has experience as a champion with Mercedes and is described as a professional capable of representing the project’s ambition, but an analysis published by Crash.net raises the possibility that he is the right professional to build the team, but at the wrong time to get it out of the back of the grid.

On the other hand, Vowles played an important role in hiring Carlos Sainz, while Alex Albon renewed his contract to remain at Williams until 2027. The performance of both drivers is also pointed out as a factor that could prevent an even worse scenario for the team, and a possible continuation of Sainz would be interpreted as another vote of confidence in the project.
Williams returns to the track in Zandvoort with a rather unpromising outlook. With the expected evolution of Aston Martin, escaping Q1 may become even more difficult, while Racing Bulls and Alpine have frequently occupied the remaining points-scoring positions. Thus, the team’s poor season, which had received less criticism due to Aston Martin’s failure, may finally increase the pressure on Vowles.
