Formula 1 begins the 2026 season with George Russell in the spotlight at the Australian GP. The Mercedes driver secured pole position at Albert Park after a dominant Saturday and will start at the front in the race that opens the championship.

Russell showed strong pace throughout the day in Melbourne. In FP3, the Briton had already opened up a gap over his rivals and confirmed his good form in qualifying by recording 1:18.518, a time that put him three-tenths ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli.
The result marked the eighth pole position of Russell’s Formula 1 career. With the front row entirely occupied by Mercedes, the British driver enters this Sunday’s race seeking his sixth victory in the category.
After qualifying, Russell highlighted that the team already believed in the car’s potential, but that confirmation only came in the first decisive session of the season. “It was a great day. We knew there was a lot of potential in the car, but until you get to this first Saturday of the season, you’re never sure,” he said.
According to Russell, the car’s performance improved especially when track conditions changed throughout the afternoon. “The car really came alive when the track temperature dropped. We know we usually favor these conditions,” the Mercedes driver added.
Russell also showed enthusiasm for the race that opens the Formula 1 championship. For him, the race at Albert Park could offer interesting battles throughout the laps. “I’m excited for the race tomorrow and I think it can provide some very interesting battles,” he stated.

Another point highlighted by the Briton was Antonelli’s presence alongside him on the front row of the starting grid. Russell praised the collective work of the Mercedes team and highlighted everyone’s effort to put the car in a competitive condition right at the start of the season.
“I’m also very happy to have Kimi here by my side, because it was very hard work from the whole team to deliver this car,” he said. The driver also praised the mechanics for the work done after an incident in FP3, when the car needed repairs before qualifying.
Despite the advantage shown in qualifying, Russell believes the race could present additional challenges. The driver highlighted that the cars introduced by Formula 1’s new technical regulations have made some aspects of racing more complex.
“Many things that were simple before, like starts and pit stops, have become much more difficult with these new cars,” he explained. Still, Russell believes Mercedes enters the race in the best possible position to fight for the win.
“I told the team at the start of Q3 that we just needed to have a clean session, because we never know what might happen tomorrow. We’re going to work hard tonight, it was a great day and we’re in the best position possible,” he concluded.
