F1: Coulthard compares Russell's possible reaction to a Rocky Balboa movie

George Russell will have an extremely difficult mission to return to the title fight in Formula 1 in 2026, according to David Coulthard. The former driver of the category believes that the series of problems faced by the Briton made his recovery unlikely, although he does not completely rule out a turnaround.

In a participation in the Up to Speed podcast, Coulthard stated that Russell arrives at the second half of the season in a delicate situation. The Mercedes driver is in third position in the championship, 59 points behind his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, leader of the standings, as well as being behind Lewis Hamilton, who took over second place thanks to the consistency shown by Ferrari.

According to Coulthard, Russell’s campaign was marked by a succession of technical problems and episodes of bad luck that cost important points. For the Scot, this also ended up affecting the psychological aspect of the driver, who no longer shows the same confidence as at the beginning of the championship: “It has been a very difficult season. How much bad luck can one person have? Part of this is something the team needs to solve. On the other hand, George is no longer living that great moment. It’s like a tennis player who receives an easy ball to finish the point, and ends up hitting the net because he starts thinking too much,” he said.

The former driver also compared Russell’s moment to that experienced by Antonelli. In Coulthard’s view, the young Italian has been able to compete more naturally thanks to the good reliability of the car, except for the problems faced at the Barcelona GP, while Russell had to deal with several setbacks throughout the season.

Despite the difficulties, Coulthard recalled that a recovery is still possible, citing Max Verstappen’s reaction in last year’s championship, when he finished P2, just two points behind champion Lando Norris. Still, he believes that Russell’s current scenario requires an almost impossible turnaround: “As we saw with Max last year, it is still possible to recover that points difference. But not even Sylvester Stallone would write a Rocky Balboa movie with such a turnaround, after so many blows. It will be a year of much learning for George,” concluded the Scot.
