Team fears new hybrid system failures that could compromise race participation

Adrian Newey revealed that Aston Martin is facing a delicate situation with its car’s hybrid system for the 2026 Formula 1 season. According to the British engineer, the team has an extremely limited number of batteries available, which could become a serious problem if further damage occurs during the Australian Grand Prix weekend.
In addition to the strong vibrations previously reported, which even raised concerns about possible physical effects on the drivers, the team is also facing failures in the energy storage system itself.
“We are having ongoing problems with the battery,” Newey stated during a press conference in Melbourne. “We had a new problem related to internal communication between the battery and the management system.”
The situation has become even more critical because the team currently has only two units available, precisely the ones installed in the cars.

“We are short on batteries. We only have two, the ones in the cars,” he explained. “If we lose one of them, it will obviously be a big problem. That’s why we need to be very careful with how we use these batteries.”

Aston Martin’s difficulties are directly linked to the new power unit developed by Honda, which has been facing significant vibrations since pre-season. The problem has limited the team’s mileage and made it difficult to fully understand the behavior of the AMR26.
During the team principals’ press conference held in Melbourne, Newey even admitted to feeling “powerless” in the face of the situation. With little track time, the team has limited data to evaluate the car and develop quick solutions.
