Martin Brundle has once again criticized the current Formula 1 regulations and argued that the concept used by the category should be abandoned as soon as possible. The Sky Sports commentator stated that the rules have harmed the spectacle, especially on high-speed circuits like Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps.

The criticisms have gained strength in recent weeks due to the return of the so-called “yo-yo effect” in battles and superclipping, a situation where drivers need to manage battery usage, reducing speed in sections that were traditionally driven with the accelerator fully pressed. In Belgium, for example, it was possible to notice from the radios that drivers eased off even at Eau Rouge to recover energy, a behavior also observed in the Maggots and Becketts corners at Silverstone.
“I think we are all still trying to understand this, to be honest. I’m even a bit sad because we lost all those great corners at Silverstone and now we come to Spa with the same situation. These new regulations hurt us on high-speed circuits,” Brundle told Sky Sports F1 before the race.

Despite the large number of overtakes in the two rounds, many of them happened due to the difference in battery usage between the cars, with positions changing repeatedly as each driver alternated the moment of using their electric charge.
Brundle acknowledged that changes are already planned to reduce this effect in the coming seasons, but believes the definitive solution will be to abandon this regulatory concept. “We are doing something for 2027 and 2028, and we need to get rid of this concept as soon as possible, in 2030 or 2031. Aside from that, it’s what we have today and, when I’m on track on a Friday, they seem incredibly fast. And when they are side by side, fighting for position, it’s very fun to watch. But, for now, they need to master all this complexity, and it is huge,” he concluded.
